TIPS FROM THE JUDGES
It is very vital to remember that the Judges have not met your child. They can only judge whatever photo or photos you send for baby contest. That is why the photo or photos that you choose to send is so vitally vital. Obviously you want to send several photos that ensure your child is looking their best. Remember that quality of the photo is also very vital.
- You only need to submit one photo but we recommend sending several. If you submit several additional photos you must enclose an additional First Class stamp to cover return postage.
- If you enter the baby contest online you may email us photos (but regular photos are highly encouraged as they are much higher in quality and simpler to judge).
- Photo sizes; smaller than 8″ x 10″ and larger than wallet size are encouraged, but 3″ x 5″ photos are preferred.
- Ensure that the photo is clear not blurry or grainy and that your child does not have “red-eye” in the photo. We receive many grainy or unclear photos – this makes it hard for your child’s photo to be judged.
- Ensure your child’s face is clear and fully visible. We receive many photos where the child’s head is turned, obscured by hats, hair, wearing dark sun glasses, etc. – this makes it very hard for your child’s photo to be judged. Ideally, your child’s face should take up most of the photo.
- Too much makeup or attempts to make the child appear “adult-like” are not advisable.
- Ensure your child is alone in the photo.
- Lighting makes a huge difference. Photos too light are washed out or too dark and shadowed lack definition and contrast.
- You must own the copyrights to any photos that you submit for baby contest. Winners turn over copyright ownership of their winning photos to ABC.
Child Photography Challenges
When we use our children as photography subjects we are faced with a wide array of challenges. Maybe it’s those tough toddlers or maybe it’s the weather that won’t comply? Whatever the challenge, though, there are ways to overcome various photography hurdles. Pictures don’t have to be perfect to be well received and treasured for years to come. It’s all about the emotion a photo evokes. Jumping the hurdles is simple, you just have to try.
- You have a child who just won’t smile or when he does smile it’s all forced and fake?
- How about capturing him when he’s not looking. Get him drawing on the sidewalk with chalk, blowing bubbles, or jumping on the trampoline.
- The rain is relentless and you haven’t taken a picture for days because you are most interested in naturally lit photographs.
- How about popping that flash and just snapping. You could be missing the best shots ever because you don’t want to use your flash.
- You have multiple children and there is always one who looks away or closes her eyes. You just want one fantastic picture of all of them together.
- How about following them as they walk hand-in-hand on the beach, or you get them all playing together in the yard, or swimming in their kiddie pool?
- There aren’t any rules that say you must have them all looking and smiling.
- The tantrums are plentiful and your dread is that you won’t get a decent picture of your terribly terrific toddler.
- How about you place that bubble machine to use and capture some shots of your child playing amidst them, or maybe bath-time is a pleased time and will yield some huge smiles. Pick out times that your child is pleased and get snappy!
- Pictures that will be treasured don’t need to be posed. In this era of the digital camera we are afforded the option of taking as many pictures as our memory cards can hold. Keep those cameras within reach and start photographing the small moments, those ordinary –yet extraordinary– moments!
